Student Counsellor

Family Welfare is a long established charity providing free, independent, and confidential counselling, advocacy, and community development services to people across the Wigan Borough.  Our services are available to adults, young people, and children aged 5 and over.

We are committed to supporting the development of future counsellors and welcome applications from student counsellors who require a placement.

As a Student Counsellor, you will have the opportunity to work with clients in a supportive and professional environment while developing your counselling skills and confidence.

As a Student Counsellor, you will:

  • Provide one to one counselling to clients either face to face or over the telephone.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records.
  • Work within the ethical framework of your professional body and Family Welfare’s policies and procedures.
  • Attend regular clinical supervision and placement reviews.
  • Participate in relevant training, team meetings, and continuing professional development opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and other volunteers to provide the highest standard of support to clients.

This placement offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable client hours within a well established community organisation while making a positive difference to people’s lives.

 

Specific Skills Required

We are looking for student counsellors who are:

  • Currently undertaking a recognised counselling qualification that requires the completion of supervised placement hours.
  • Empathetic, approachable, and non-judgemental.
  • Good communicators with effective listening skills.
  • Committed to maintaining professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical practice.
  • Reliable, organised, and able to manage their placement responsibilities.
  • Willing to learn, reflect, and engage with their own supervision and/or feedback.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and risk management.

  • Student counsellors will have the support of a nominated Counselling Coordinator throughout their placement. The Coordinator will be available to provide guidance, answer questions, and support students as they develop their counselling skills and confidence. If the Counselling Coordinator is unavailable, students will have access to other qualified and experienced counsellors within the team who are available to offer support and guidance when needed.
