Trustee
As a trustee at We Are Explorers CIC, you will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of our organisation, ensuring that we continue to provide crucial support to the LGBTQ+ and Neurodivergent community. With 3.8% of the UK population identifying as LGBTQ+ and 35% of Neurodivergent individuals being part of this community, yet queer spaces remaining largely inaccessible, your involvement will directly help bridge this gap.
This is a vital position, ensuring we can maintain and expand our support for young people and adults navigating life as neurodivergent and/or LGBTQ+. Whether through delivering our own services, raising awareness, or training other organisations, your unique skills in leadership, funding, and strategy will help guide us toward becoming a more self-sustaining organisation, making a lasting impact on the communities we serve.
Your role will also help strengthen our governance, particularly as we grow our training and consultancy offerings, ensuring that we can offer meaningful, lasting change to those who rely on our services.
Specific Skills Required
We are looking for a trustee who is passionate about the work we do and can contribute to the ongoing development of our organisation. Lived experience of being LGBTQ+ and/or Neurodivergent is desirable, but not essential. What is important is a commitment to inclusivity, equality, and the wellbeing of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Key skills and experience we are looking for:
Leadership Experience:
We seek someone with strong leadership experience who can guide the organisation’s growth. Experience in running a CIC or charity, or in senior management, is highly valued. You will be working alongside our Neurodivergent CEO, so the ability to collaborate with and support a Neurodivergent leader is essential.
Flexibility and Adaptability:
Our organisation is dynamic, and the ability to adapt to change is key. You should be comfortable in a fast-evolving environment and ready to help the organisation identify new opportunities.
Funding Knowledge:
We are currently grant-reliant, and experience in fundraising, securing grants, or helping an organisation become more self-sustaining would be valuable. Financial oversight skills will also be beneficial.
Understanding of LGBTQ+ and Neurodivergent Communities:
A background in understanding the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and Neurodivergent people would be valuable. This understanding will help us create accessible spaces and services that meet the needs of our communities.
Commitment to Safe, Person-Led, and Engaging Practices:
We are committed to providing safe, person-led spaces that empower our community. A strong commitment to these values will ensure our services continue to meet the needs of the people we serve.
Strong Communication and Teamwork Skills:
You should be able to communicate effectively with board members, staff, and external partners. Collaboration is essential, so the ability to work well within a team is crucial.

We are seeking someone who shares our vision of bridging the gap between LGBTQ+ and Neurodivergent people and the spaces and services often inaccessible to them. Your commitment will help us raise awareness, provide direct services, and train other organisations to be more inclusive.
