Home-Start Wigan

Poplar Road

Salford  M32 9AN

Role and Opportunity Details

We are looking for local people in Wigan and Leigh with parenting experience to give the gift of time to a local family for just a couple of hours each week in the family’s own home.

Volunteers, (who are trained) offer a mix of emotional and practical support to families who need a little bit of help. It might be a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or a practical pair of hands.

Specific Skills Required

Parenting experience or care-giving experience and a non-judgemental attitude.

All of our volunteers are given training before being matched to their first family.

All volunteers receive ongoing support and supervision on their Home-Start journey.

Benefits of Volunteering with this organisation

  • Our volunteers (who come from all backgrounds and walks of life) say that volunteering often increases their confidence and self esteem.
  • They also tell us that being able to impart their own parenting or care-giving knowledge gives them a sense of empowerment.
  • Many of our younger volunteers use their Home-Start experience as a stepping stone to higher education or to enhance their career prospects.
  • Our older volunteers tell us that giving their time to a local family can help reduce loneliness and isolation, that some feel once retiring, and gives them a sense of purpose once more.

Level of commitment required

Date(s) / Time(s) Required
