Role and Opportunity Details
We are looking for local people in Wigan and Leigh with parenting experience to give the gift of time to a local family for just a couple of hours each week in the family’s own home.
Volunteers, (who are trained) offer a mix of emotional and practical support to families who need a little bit of help. It might be a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or a practical pair of hands.
Specific Skills Required
Parenting experience or care-giving experience and a non-judgemental attitude.
All of our volunteers are given training before being matched to their first family.
All volunteers receive ongoing support and supervision on their Home-Start journey.
Benefits of Volunteering with this organisation
- Our volunteers (who come from all backgrounds and walks of life) say that volunteering often increases their confidence and self esteem.
- They also tell us that being able to impart their own parenting or care-giving knowledge gives them a sense of empowerment.
- Many of our younger volunteers use their Home-Start experience as a stepping stone to higher education or to enhance their career prospects.
- Our older volunteers tell us that giving their time to a local family can help reduce loneliness and isolation, that some feel once retiring, and gives them a sense of purpose once more.
