Role and Opportunity Details (to apply for this role you must be 18+)

Various volunteer roles

Read Easy UK is a registered charity that supports volunteers to set up Read Easy groups in their own communities.  The Wigan Read Easy group was set up in September 2022 to offer free, confidential, one-to-one reading support.

We are looking to help more adults in Wigan who need reading support.  We know that 2.5 million adults – over 7% of the adult population – in England alone, can’t read or struggle with everyday reading, and we’re passionate about transforming more lives in the community through our proven, confidential programme of free, one-to-one, volunteer-led adult reading coaching.

Becoming a volunteer for Read Easy is fun and fulfilling but requires commitment and passion.  You’ll be given lots of support, meet a diverse range of people, and be part of a genuinely life-changing organisation.  From experience, we know that learning to read really does change lives and being part of that process is special.

We are looking for people who need support with reading.  If you know someone who may need free, confidential, one-to-one reading support please contact us.

We currently have vacancies for the following volunteer team roles:

Reading Coach – you’ll meet with your reader for two separate half hour sessions each week, where you’ll provide non-judgemental literacy support.  You don’t need to have teaching experience as full training will be provided, but you do need to demonstrate empathy and understanding whilst maintaining boundaries.

Publicity organiser – publicity is key to the local community understanding what our group does and how people can get the reading support they need, or volunteer to help.  You’d get the message out there, using local media, social media, leaflets, posters, and other resources provided by Read Easy.

Fundraiser – use your tenacity and creativity to raise funds to ensure the group’s running expenses are covered, this would include making applications to local grant givers.

IT Supporter – if you have strong IT skills you could provide invaluable support to our volunteers when they hit a problem or require support with things like setting up Microsoft accounts, accessing their email on various devices and supporting Coaches using IT to deliver remote coaching.

Full training is given, whatever role you are in, as well as a huge range of resources to support volunteers.  There is a Regional Adviser on hand to support volunteers and groups.
