Role and Opportunity Details
The Reader needs volunteers to run reading groups. They deliver “Shared Reading” groups in a range of settings in Wigan & Leigh, such as charities and care homes.
Opportunities include running reading groups for carers, or older people. The sessions focus around reading extracts of poetry and fiction aloud, and then having chats around them.
If you are passionate about helping people enjoy books and reading, or want to help people have a place to come together and make connections from others, we want to hear from you.
Specific Skills Required
The Reader provide full training to deliver the groups.
Before going on training, they will invite you along to a taster session to see if you enjoy Shared Reading.
All you need to be is eager to give it a try!
Benefits of Volunteering with this organisation
When volunteering with The Reader, you get to make a difference in your local community, while also being supported by a national organisation.
Their Volunteers have told them they love getting the chance to regularly engage with reading and that delivering sessions has helped their own wellbeing.
Volunteers become part of the wider Reader community, and are supported through a dedicated volunteer support team – as well as getting to access loads of amazing literature resources.
Level of commitment required
Usually volunteers lead a group once a week, although fortnightly opportunities do also come up.
Holidays and breaks from running the groups are expected and allowed.
