Wigan Council Shared Lives Service.


Role and Opportunity Details 

The Shared Lives Service works with adults who need support due to disability, age, illness or someone who is socially isolated.

We are looking for Shared Lives Champions to support our customers. Support can range from as little as 4 hours per week, we also offer respite and full time placements. Our Shared Lives Champions:

  • Support people in their local and wider community to engage in meaningful activities, for example swimming, local community groups, cinema.
  • Promote independence and help to develop daily living skills including cooking, cleaning, managing laundry.
  • Accompany someone to appointments when necessary.
  • Support someone to remain safe and well – this may include supporting someone with managing their medication or their own finances / bills.

A modest payment for expenses depending on the level of support provided is payable to the Shared Lives Champion.


Specific Skills Required

  • Be over the age of 18
  • Have a minimum of 4 hours per week to spare
  • Have a spare bedroom (for long term and short break / respite support)
  • Support someone to seek opportunities to develop their skills and aspirations in their own communities
  • Be caring and want to develop new relationships.

All mandatory training will be provided, we welcome applications from people who have sound values and beliefs and a willingness to support a vulnerable person and to make a difference to their lives. We can arrange for you to match up with an experienced Champion, so they can offer advice and guidance to you.

Optional membership of Shared Lives Plus, a national organisation that offers guidance and advice.

There are special tax rules for some Shared Lives champion and an amount of what they receive is exempt from tax.  More details will be provided to you once you become an approved Shared Lives champion.
